In view of the alarming increase in the number of nutritional disorders, we
decided to devote one of our projects to the negative effects on health and
wellbeing caused by childhood obesity. Our aim is to help children aged between
nine and thirteen and their families. In 2002 we felt the need to show our
social commitment to the local community and initiated our nutritional education
project. The main aim of the project: to indicate a series of lifestyle changes
aimed at preventing the health risks and problems linked to childhood obesity.
Objects of the project:
- Inform and educate the child and its family with regard
to unhealthy eating habits, pointing out the healthy alternatives to be found in
traditional local cuisine.
- Draw attention to the appropriate caloric intake in
relation to increase in height, and the health risks linked to unhealthy eating
habits.
- Teach how to develop more healthy eating habits, how to judge quality,
choose and buy food.
- Teach how to use all the senses with regard to food
through games involving observation, touch and preparation, (workshops on olive
growing, flavours, tastings and cooking).
- Bring children closer to the concept
of nutrition through the ages, in religion, in art, and the numerous traditions
surrounding the preparation of food.
- Reassess the concept of seasonal food
both in terms of harvest and flavour.
- Encourage the rediscovery of local,
family, and feast day traditions.
- Discover how different crops grow in
different terrains giving rise to different eating habits.
At present our action
plan is included in the school syllabus of three communes in our area, (Sarteano, Cetona and San Casciano dei bagni) and over 150 children take part.
The continuation of the project will allow us to offer our services to other
schools in other areas.
